1. All-New Move Lite Folding Power Chair

Overview

All-new move lite folding power chair is the perfect companion for those looking to maintain their independence. With its ability to fold into one piece and easily fit in the trunk of most vehicles, it offers great convenience. It’s constructed with aircraft quality aluminum, making it incredibly strong and able to hold up to 300 lbs. The flat-free rear tires offer improved traction over rough terrain, while the removable seat covers make cleaning easy. Also, this is a very light weight and fast electric wheelchair, making it one of the best foldable power chairs.

Top Features

  • Folds and chair weight of only 50 lb: this is one of the most lightweight folding wheelchairs on the list. If you prioritize portability —for example, you use transportation often (whether this involves going to/coming back from grocery store, doctor’s appointments, work, social events, etc…), I would strongly recommend this wheelchair.
  • Top speed of 5mph: one of the fastest max speeds compared to the other wheelchairs on this list. If your goal is only to get from point A to B….or you’re speed racer, impatient, like to live on the faster lane of life…you get the gist.
  • Miles per charge/ approximate driving range is 15 miles. The wheelchairs on this list range from 12 miles to 20 miles, so this power wheelchair would be considered mid range on that spectrum. The lithium battery takes about 6-8 hours to charge to full.

Other Specification

  • Maximum weight capacity: 300 lb
  • Airline approved
  • Seat dimensions: 16 inch dept, 18.5 inch seat width
  • Max climbing angle: 8 – 12 degrees

Considerations

  • Doesn’t come with a seat belt but you can add one for an additional $24.
  • The lithium battery should be charged frequently (I would recommend after every use). It is also very important that you do not deeply discharge the battery (charge after 30-50% dept of discharge, generally no more than 80%). For example, if you are starting at 100% battery, charge it when battery reaches 50-70%, do not wait until it drops below 20%.
  • Rear-wheel drive and turning radius is 31.5 in: while great for outdoor and rough terrain, can be harder to navigate tight spaces.

Considerations

  • While the turning radius is not given, this is a rear-wheel drive wheelchair (largest wheel is in the back) —which tends to be harder to navigate in tight spaces compared to front and mid-wheel drive wheelchairs becuase of a larger turn radius. That said, the benefits of rear-wheel drive is that it is great for speed and can handle rough outdoor terrains well.

Will Medicare cover the cost of my wheelchair?

Medicare Part B functions as supplementary medical insurance, offering individuals the choice to opt out if they wish. For those enrolled in Medicare Part B, assistive devices such as rollators are categorized as durable medical equipment (DME). That said, there is a specific criteria that an individual has to meet to qualify for reimbursement for a wheelchair.

Navigating the reimbursement process for a wheelchair, or an other assitive device, involves a series of steps, which can vary in order and specificity. In most cases, for those exploring an assistive device through Medicare Part B, it starts with a doctor prescribing the device as a medical necessity.

Following the prescription, the next step is to coordinate with a certified occupational therapist, physical therapist, or a Medicare-approved wheelchair supplier. Your therapist may also provide recommendations for approved suppliers, simplifying the process.

The collaborative assessment by your therapist aims to understand your mobility needs, medical condition, and lifestyle requirements, forming the basis for accurate form submissions to Medicare. The time it takes to obtain your assistive device varies based on factors such as the extent of customization required.

It’s important to note that Medicare covers the basic level of DME products for specific conditions. When you need new equipment, your doctor must provide documentation stating its medical necessity for your condition. Understanding these steps and collaborating closely with your healthcare team can facilitate a smoother process for acquiring the necessary assistive devices through Medicare.
